Matthew Stafford Shares His Honest Thoughts About Retirement

The biggest question facing the Los Angeles Rams just so happens to be at the most important position in the sport. No matter what happens over the next few weeks, Matthew Stafford will complete his 16th season in the NFL, but the likelihood that he will play another season is to be determined.

Matthew Stafford Weighing Future With Los Angeles Rams

The soon-to-be 37-year-old was asked about his plans during his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show;

“I don’t want to put a time limit on it but I definitely think about that way more now than I did in 2009,” Stafford said. “You know, I’ve got a family. I’ve got young kids. I want to make sure I’m there and be a part of it. I feel like I do a good job during the season being as present as I possibly can, but I don’t want to miss too much. But at the same time, I feel like I’m playing at a high level. I love playing this game. I love competing. So hopefully I can hang around here for a little bit longer.”

Stafford is a proud dad to four daughters; twins Sawyer and Chandler (7), Hunter (6), and Tyler (4).

“It’s the greatest part of my life, to be honest with you,” he said in a Rams.com Q&A in 2021. “It changed it in so many ways. … You’ll never know, what that feeling is until you have kids and I’ve been lucky enough to have that four times. Four beautiful little daughters. I’m lucky in that regard.”

Stafford is currently the second most experienced quarterback in the league having played 222 games so far in his career. He is behind only Aaron Rodgers who has played in 249.

All of that playing time comes with its own degree of punishment. Matthew Stafford has been sacked 502 times in his career, which is seventh most in NFL history. Those sacks have resulted in several major injuries, most recently he suffered a spinal cord bruise which forced him to miss seven games in 2022.

In 2019, Stafford ended his season due to the fractured bones in his back in Week 9 game vs. the Raiders. Early in his career, he dealt with a shoulder injury for the better part of the 2009 and 2010 seasons which forced him to miss 16 games.

While his retirement will be on his terms, if Stafford decides to hang them up after this season, the Rams will have big shoes to fill, without a guaranteed option on the roster. Outside of Stafford, they have Jimmy Garoppolo, who will be a free agent after the season. Stetson Bennett will have two more seasons on his rookie contract having been drafted by the Rams in 2023.
