Marcus Mariota Reveals The Why In Commanders Re-Signing

The Washington Commanders have done some serious wheeling and dealing this offseason, signing Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil in free agency.

Plus, the Commanders have re-signed some of their own, most notably Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz, but now the franchise has brought back another veteran.

Marcus Mariota put pen to paper on a one-year, $8 million deal to stay in the nation's capital for another season.

While Marcus's desire for a starting job is still there, he details that in the end, what is being built in Washington lures him back.

"I think it was always the right fit," Mariota said. "I think for me, it was more of an ego and pride thing, of seeing what was out there, seeing if I could get another shot at it [starting job], I'll never close that door, but there had to be something unbeleiveable that you couldn't pass up that would have made me leave. After all these discussions, this is the right fit and I'm excited to be back."

The relationship between Mariota and rookie Jayden Daniels was well documented last season, and when Marcus had to step in for his teammate, he looked good - really good.

In his two games, Mariota threw for a combined 364 yards and four touchdowns while completing 77.3 percent of his passes.

Now, he returns to again learn under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, as Washington has a solid quarterback room with Mariota and Daniels.

Yes, the lure to become a starter again was strong for Mariota, but what was stronger was his desire to return to Washington and continue being a part of Dan Quinn's Commanders vision.
