BUFFALO — Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota did something on Sunday that a Titans quarterback hasn’t done on the 2024 season.
After rookie Jayden Daniels left the game with an injury to his ribs, Mariota took over at quarterback for the Washington Commanders against the Carolina Panthers.
Mariota exceeded all expectations, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 passing yards and two touchdowns. The dual threat veteran QB also added 34 rushing yards to his statline as the Commanders demolished the Panthers, 40-7.
The former second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft is now with his fifth organization. Mariota has been biding his time waiting for an opportunity to play, and he made the most of it on Sunday afternoon. In fact, Mariota’s big day gave Washington better quarterback play than the Titans seen all season
Mariota threw multiple touchdown passes and did not turn the ball over. The last time that happened in Tennessee was November 19th, 2023 when Will Levis did it in a blowout 34-14 loss to the Jaguars…and that was in a loss!
Mariota also led his team to a win on Sunday. The last time a Titans quarterback did those things in a game and won was Will Levis’ NFL debut against the Atlanta Falcons on October 29th, 2023.
Since that glorious four touchdown game, things have started to go downhill for Levis. To be fair, Ryan Tannehill and Mason Rudolph haven’t been any better.
It’s days like today - when the Titans lose 34-10 and Marcus Mariota is lighting up the league - that really make Titans fans question the organization. Rightfully so. Tennesse found a way to turn a stable contender into a top-to-bottom disaster in just a few years. Sunday was just a very sobering reminder of that.
