The Celtics are riding high after a memorable visit to the White House on Thursday this week. They will return to Boston after finishing a brief road trip Friday night but there’s been plenty of drama surrounding them across the NBA, including some involving familiar faces.. Let’s dive into some questions about Marcus Smart and the mess in Philadelphia right now.
What is going on with Marcus Smart in Memphis? I know he’s been banged up a lot but it looks like he’s been coming off the bench when he’s been healthy. Is he still a big part of their future with the Grizzlies or are there young guys passing him? -- AJ
It’s been another rough start to the year for Smart in Memphis after playing just 20 games last year prior to being shut down for the year. This time around, Smart dealt with a knee issue during most of training camp and seemingly has dealt with some sort of other ailment almost every other night when he’s been back on the floor.
The net result has been a very uneven start for the veteran guard who is shooting just 30 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point range in seven appearances. His last two games have been off the bench but he also hasn’t played in a week (sat out Wednesday due to illness) so it’s unclear if his bench play is a permanent demotion.
With that said, it will be fascinating to see how this plays out for the 30-year-old. The Grizzlies have some emerging young guard talent on that roster beyond Ja Morant and Desmond Bane with JayLen Wells and Scotty Pippen Jr. having strong starts while Smart has been sidelined. At 9-7, the Grizzles are very much in the playoff hunt despite their injuries to Smart and company but Smart is still on a relatively big deal ($20.2 million this season, $21.6 million next year) to be coming off the bench in a place like Memphis.
If the Grizzlies decide to invest more in their younger guys, Smart could become one of the more impactful players on the trade market ahead of the deadline in February. It’s still too early to know what path the Grizzlies will take on that front, but the Grizzlies payroll will probably need to be trimmed heading into next year.
