Los Angeles Rams Warned To Avoid Controversial Draft Pick

The Los Angeles Rams‘ exploration of long-term quarterback options is a logical and prudent strategy. Matthew Stafford, now 37, has endured a physically demanding 16-year career. The prospect of retirement is a recurring consideration for him each offseason, making it imperative for the team to proactively plan for the future.

Los Angeles Rams land offensive weapons for QB Matthew Stafford in the first mock draft after the initial wave of NFL free agency

In this context, the Rams’ predraft interest in Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe warrants a close look. Milroe undeniably possesses exceptional natural talent. He is an elite athlete with a powerful arm, offering arguably the highest potential ceiling among the quarterbacks in this draft class. However, he also presents the steepest developmental curve among the top quarterback prospects.

Should The Los Angeles Rams Draft Jalen Milroe?

According to Bleacher Report, LA would be better served to look elsewhere for a quarterback. “The Rams don’t need to rush Milroe into the lineup. Sean McVay is also one of the NFL’s best offensive minds,” BR writes. “At the same time, Milroe may never be efficient enough as a passer to maximize his coach’s scheme. The Rams already showed with Jared Goff that they’re not willing to put in time with a quarterback whose limitations hold the offense back.”

Since the team doesn’t have a second-round pick, they would either have to take Milroe in the first round, trade back, or hope he is still around in the late third round, where they have picks 90 and 101. Given these options, a trade-back scenario would be the most ideal.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranks Milroe as the 5th-best quarterback and the 73rd-ranked prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft. He writes, “Overall, Milroe is unpolished as a passer, both physically and mentally, but he is a dynamic athlete with a unique blend of speed, arm strength and intelligence, making him an intriguing developmental option for a patient coaching staff. His upside is tough to measure, but it is higher considering he has the tools to switch positions if his time at quarterback doesn’t pan out.”
