Los Angeles Rams Urged To Pursue Star Free Agent Safety

The NFL offseason has slowed down a lot since the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, there are still quite a few high-profile free agents that are left on the market. Teams like the Los Angeles Rams, who are still trying to fill some needs, have excellent opportunities to bring in players before the start of training camp.

Speaking of the Rams, there are a few areas that could upgrading. One of them comes at the safety position.

With that in mind, there is one really good free agent safety on the market that could make sense. Now, they are starting to be linked to that free agent safety.

Los Angeles Rams Urged To Pursue Free Agent Safety

ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell recently suggested that the Rams should sign free agent safety Justin Simmons, formerly of the Denver Broncos.

“What about the Rams? They are transitioning on defense after losing coordinator Raheem Morris to the Falcons and replacing him with Chris Shula, but there’s a chance they’ll still run some of the Vic Fangio-style coverages they used under Morris and Brandon Staley. And although Simmons is 30, he came of age and emerged as an elite safety under Fangio when the two were in Denver…Bringing in Simmons on a one-year deal would give L.A. an immediate starter at safety to play alongside Curl while allowing the franchise to bring Kinchens along slowly as a potential nickel safety.”

Simmons would be a very intriguing addition for the Rams, as well as quite a few other teams around the NFL.

During the 2023 season with the Broncos, Simmons put up yet another good season. He compiled 70 total tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three interceptions, and eight defended passes. Those are some very productive numbers.

For the Los Angeles Rams, this would be an ideal move to upgrade their defensive secondary. It’s honestly surprising that Simmons has not been signed so far. He’s a quality and proven starter and likely could be had for a very reasonable contract.

If the Rams want to get back to being Super Bowl contenders, they need to get aggressive. Going out and signing Simmons at this point in the offseason would be the kind of aggressive move to take their contention hopes a big step forward.

Expect to see the market start heating up for the remaining free agents in the near future. If the Rams want to make a defensive addition, they should look no further than Simmons.
