Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams was magnificent against the New York Jets, thoroughly earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording two sacks, a 92-yard pick-six, and even a blocked extra point.
And yet, his dominant performance did have one mistake that cost him a sack and will cost him some money.
The NFL fined Williams $16,883 for his opening quarter facemask takedown of Aaron Rodgers, which negated a sack that would’ve put the Jets out of field goal range. New York would eventually score the game’s opening touchdown after the infraction.
Face-masking the QB is pretty much an automatic fine, and there was no doubt that this was a penalty. It’s Williams’ second fine this season, having previously grabbed onto Deebo Samuel’s face mask in the Week 6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The only other fine from this game was for Jets defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, whose horse collar tackle of Zach Charbonnet on 4th and 1 on Seattle’s game-winning touchdown drive extended the series. Thomas was docked $16,833 for the infraction.
