On August 6, three daytime icons got together to mark the end of an era: Days of Our Lives and Bold & Beautiful Emmy winner Susan Flannery’s departure from the US.
“Three Susies have breakfast at Art’s Deli,” Susan Seaforth Hayes captioned an Instagram post featuring lovely then-and-now photos of herself with Flannery and Suzanne Rogers. Hayes and Flannery were longtime co-stars on Days of Our Lives in the 1960s and ’70s as Laura Horton and Julie Olson, respectively. Rogers joined the cast as Maggie Simmons just in time for Flannery’s last two years in Salem.
“The occasion: Susan Flannery, one of the great ladies of daytime or anywhere she turns up, is moving to Australia,” Hayes explained. “Flannery was a beloved mentor and pal to Suzanne and me in our early Salem days together.”
Needless to say, the get-together yielded “laughs, love, tears hugs,” Hayes added, “just like Salem. We will miss her.”
After departing Days of Our Lives in 1975, Flannery made inroads in primetime and movies and even won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year for the disaster flick The Towering Inferno. In 1987, she returned to daytime, accepting the role of Bold & Beautiful queen bee Stephanie Forrester that had originally been offered to Hayes. For her work in the role, she added three Daytime Emmys to her trophy case, which already included a statuette for her star turn on Days of Our Lives.
