One of the biggest wildcards, or questions, per se, regarding the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025 has to be their secondary. It's not that people think they will be extremely bad; it's that we don't really know if they will be good or bad.
The experience isn't really there in the cornerback room, but it is in the safety room. But, in the safety room, the depth isn't great, or wasn't great, I should say. The cornerback room has two veterans who are predicted to be guys who actually see the field: Darnay Holmes, who previously played for the New York Giants, and Eric Stokes, who previously played for the Green Bay Packers.
And neither of those guys has really been the guy on a team. On this team, it's Jakorian Bennett as the CB1. His potential is amazing, as last year, before he was hurt, he led the NFL in pass breakups, and he did it on a shoulder that was out of place. But, he's only going into his third year and has yet to play a full season.
Then there is second-year guy Decamerion Richardson and rookie Darien Porter. Both have crazy potential. On the safety side of things, the starting unit looks great with Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao. But, the backup safety would have been Lonnie Johnson, a journeyman and special teams ace, and then after him, a handful of guys who have never played, really.
So, something in the secondary needed to be addressed. Something in the secondary was addressed.
Raiders and Pete Carroll sign Jamal Adams
If this were 2020, you could say this is one of the splashiest moves any team could make at this point in the offseason.
Then, Adams was one of the best safeties in the league. But he always had coverage issues. Over the years, he has gotten progressively worse, just to tell the truth. That could be because of scheme issues, coaches not putting him in great spots, or even injuries. The former Seattle Seahawks safety under Pete Carroll was once elite.
But it's still somewhat of a splashy play, because the name is a big name, and he could probably be a great backup. And who knows, the Raiders may even put him in the box, or let him play linebacker.
It's the day before camp when this signing was made, but man, it's one that they really did need. Sure, he's not what he was, but he's perfect for what they need.
