The Los Angeles Lakers may be making quiet waves this offseason, with growing speculation that they are closing in on veteran sharpshooter Gary Trent Jr. Sources around the league suggest the front office sees Trent as a low-cost, high-impact option who could bring much-needed perimeter firepower to a roster in need of spacing.
Trent, 26, is coming off a solid stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he rediscovered some of his form from his breakout years in Toronto. Known for his elite three-point shooting, tight defensive instincts, and ability to score in bunches, Trent would be an ideal fit alongside stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
For a Lakers team that struggled with outside shooting consistency last season, Trent Jr. could be the missing link. He doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective—his ability to move without the ball and punish defenses from beyond the arc makes him an ideal catch-and-shoot weapon in JJ Redick’s expected offensive system.
His playoff experience and age also make him a valuable long-term piece if the Lakers are looking to build a more sustainable supporting cast around their aging superstars. And at an affordable mid-level contract, the financial risk would be minimal compared to the upside he brings.
The biggest question remains whether the Lakers can clear the necessary cap space or engage in a sign-and-trade, as Trent is reportedly committed to returning to Milwaukee unless a compelling opportunity arises.
Still, with Rob Pelinka known for pulling off under-the-radar deals, don’t be surprised if this one materializes quickly.
If this deal goes through, Gary Trent Jr. could become L.A.’s new sniper—one who quietly changes the dynamics of a championship-hungry squad.
