The Knicks have announced the release of two-way players Matt Ryan and Jacob Toppin, leaving swingman Kevin McCullar as the team’s sole remaining two-way player.
In addition, as noted by Ian Begley of SNY.tv, the Knicks currently have an open spot on their standard roster, potentially making them a player in the buyout market, where several veteran options remain available.
Ryan, a 6-foot-6 forward, appeared in 19 regular-season games for the Knicks this season, averaging 1.5 points and 0.4 rebounds in 3.6 minutes per game. He also spent time with New York’s Westchester G League affiliate, where he posted 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in just two games.
Ryan has played for Boston, the Lakers, Minnesota, and New Orleans since entering the league in 2021. Over his four-year NBA career, he has appeared in 82 games, averaging 3.7 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.5 assists, with a career 40.2% shooting mark from beyond the arc.
Toppin, a 6-9 forward, had an even more limited role with the Knicks, playing in just 16 games this season. In 3.1 minutes per game, he averaged 0.4 points and 0.7 rebounds. However, Toppin showed significant promise in the G League, where he averaged 25.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.7 steals across 11 regular-season games for Westchester.
Both players are now free agents, and the Knicks will likely explore options to bolster their roster for the postseason push.
