Knicks' Head Coaching Search Gets Massive Update on Tuesday

The New York Knicks just enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent memory. For the first time since 2000, the Knicks advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they took on a familiar opponent in the Indiana Pacers. Many believed the Knicks were a shoo-in for the NBA Finals after they knocked off the defending champion Boston Celtics.

It was just the latest chapter in the storied rivalry between the Knicks and Pacers. Unfortunately, this trip to the conference finals ended just as their last one did, a defeat at the hands of the Pacers.

Knicks head coaching search gets massive update on Tuesday

Some would consider their first trip to the conference finals in 25 years a successful season. However, the Knicks' upper brass didn't see it that way, as they chose to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau after five seasons. To some, the move came as a shock. To others in the media, anything less than an NBA Championship was considered a failure.

The Knicks requested interviews with numerous coaches around the league, but their requests were denied. The Knicks received a significant update regarding their search for Thibodeau's replacement on Tuesday from ESPN's Shams Charania.

"The New York Knicks are interviewing Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori for the team's head coaching job, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote. "Now three candidates – Nori and two former head coaches Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins – have done formal interviews for the Knicks' vacancy."

It would be tough for Knicks fans to watch an experienced coach like Thibodeau being shown the door and bringing in an assistant to a team that was so close to making the NBA Finals.

Mike Brown helped lead the Sacramento Kings to the playoffs in 2023, snapping a 16-year drought. Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins would also be a solid fit for the position. Many were shocked when the Grizzlies fired Jenkins on March 28, despite having a record of 44-29.

All eyes will be on the Knicks' head coaching search as the offseason progresses.
