According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, All-Pro and Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow of the Detroit Lions has officially informed the team he plans to retire at age 29. In a post shared on X, Rapoport wrote:
‘Sources: #Lions All-Pro and Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow, one of the game’s best, has informed the team he plans to retire. A stellar career comes to a close.’
Ragnow was widely considered the anchor of Detroit’s offensive line, a unit that helped fuel the Lions’ explosive resurgence in recent seasons. Drafted 20th overall in 2018, he spent his entire career in Detroit and was instrumental in the team’s dominance over the Bears. Ragnow also shared a connection with Ben Johnson, who was on Detroit’s coaching staff from 2019 through 2024—including stints as tight ends coach and offensive coordinator.
With Ragnow stepping away, and Ben Johnson now on the opposite sideline, there’s a subtle but symbolic shift underway. The NFC North remains competitive, but a very key piece just quietly exited the field. Time will tell if Chicago can capitalize on the moment—but for now, the groundwork is being laid.
