The future of quarterback Sam Darnold is the biggest storyline for the Minnesota Vikings right now.
We currently don't know what the Vikings want to do when it comes to the future at quarterback. The prevailing thought is that J.J. McCarthy will take over, but the franchise tag is still there for Darnold.
However, there isn't any consensus. Why? Probably because the Vikings are likely waiting until the National Football League Scouting Combine is next week to make sure they have all the information.
Kevin O'Connell talks about Sam Darnold and free agency
During Super Bowl week, there were a lot of media appearances by coaches, players, and media personalities. With all of that coming out, there are often some that slip through the cracks.
One of those was of Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell who did an interview with ESPN Radio during Super Bowl week and he nearly exposed their quarterback plans.
"There was an organizational plan in place where we wanted to have a guy that we thought we could win football games with while still attempting to draft our quarterback of the future.
"To be sitting here today, Sam Darnold, 14 wins later, his best season of his career by far. He deserves all the credit for that. We had belief in him and he earned it with his teammates on a daily basis. But then also to have J.J. McCarthy now healthy, gonna have a full offseason, I think it's going to be really exciting. We'll see how the free agency process works out for Sam."
So, the final line is what's interesting about O'Connell's comments. "We'll see how the free agency process works out for Sam" certainly sounds like the Vikings have decided what to do barring any new information they might learn at the combine next week.
It's also interesting that O'Connell used those words to describe it. He is always very calculated with how he speaks to the media, which is why the words are so fascinating to hear from O'Connell. Is he trying to tell us that Darnold is gone?
We'll know the answer in less than three weeks.
