Kansas City Chiefs Would Acquire Massive Jacksonville Jaguars Starter For Patrick Mahomes In This Trade Proposal

The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into training camp unsure of their starter at one premium position, the left tackle spot. The Chiefs have found their replacement for Donovan Smith, who is currently a free agent.

Wanya Morris and rookie Kingsley Suamataia are expected to battle in training camp for the starting left tackle job. However, the Chiefs could look for outside to help to fortify Patrick Mahomes’ protection for the upcoming season.

As previously discussed on GH, the Chiefs expect to change their strategy for the upcoming season. Head coach Andy Reid wants to dial up more deep passes, and the offensive line will have to hold up so Mahomes can have time to throw downfield.

Gary Davenport with Bleacher Report came up with the trade that could help the Chiefs in their quest to win three straight Super Bowls. Davenport thinks the Chiefs could trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for Cam Robinson:

There is a reason no team in the history of the NFL has won three consecutive Super Bowls. It’s impossible in the salary-cap era to hold a championship-caliber roster together. The Kansas City Chiefs are just the latest example of this—as things stand today, the two-time defending champions will enter the 2024 season with their third starting left tackle in as many years.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes’ blind side sounds important.

To be fair, Cam Robinson has never been the left tackle the Jaguars thought they were getting with the 34th pick in 2017—at least not consistently. His 2023 season was marred by both injury and a suspension, and he’ll be a free agent in 2025. While speaking to the media, Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson acknowledged that Robinson needs to step up his game this year.

“Now the injury is out of anybody’s control,” Pederson said, “but talking about the suspension, right, and it’s about being a pro. And listen, these are conversations that Cam, we know, he’s had, and we’ve had, you know. I definitely like having him on the team. He’s fun to be around, brings a lot of energy out there and it makes us better.”

The deal would help boost the Chiefs’ offensive line in the short term this season. While earning a three-peat has been the team’s focal point this offseason, they also have to consider how they’re going to keep the team competitive with a roster that has several high-income earners.

The Chiefs need to keep their draft capital. This April, they invested a second-round pick in Suamataia. The team might be better off seeing if he or Morris is competent enough to start.

Robinson, at six-foot-six, 335 pounds, is a massive left tackle. However, his performance on the field hasn’t always matched his physical talent. According to Pro Football Focus, Robinson’s highest overall grade came in the 2021 season, when he earned a 67.4 grade. Robinson has always been a better pass blocker than a run blocker, so he’d fit the Chiefs’ new system. But, his limited ability would make for an expensive Band-Aid.
