Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has his sights set on multiple pieces of history as he begins the NFL Playoffs tomorrow afternoon against the Houston Texans. With 15 career playoff wins, he is only one win away from history. He is looking to tie San Francisco 49ers legend, and former Chief, Joe Montana for the second-most all-time playoff wins for a starting quarterback. Tom Brady laps the competition with 35 career playoff wins.
Mahomes’ record in the NFL Playoffs is a whopping 15-3 and the all-time leader in multiple postseason statistics including winning percentage, total yards per game, TD-INT ratio, and passer rating. Will he be able to tie Montana and help the Kansas City Chiefs continue its march toward history?
Kansas City Chiefs Face a Tough Teat
Kansas City welcomes the Houston Texans to town on Saturday afternoon. Mahomes is already one of the best postseason performers in league history, but he has been especially good in the AFC Divisional Round. Houston is a huge underdog heading into the contest. One of their paths to victory includes a rusty Mahomes and Kansas City offense.
While the Kanas City Chiefs finished with a 15-2 record, and the AFC’s top seed, it has not been all smooth sailing for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Of their 15 regular season wins, 11 have been by 8 points or fewer. The Chiefs have been living on the edge all season, but their championship pedigree has led them to victory.
Mahomes also had a down season by his lofty standards. He had the fewest passing yards in his career as KC’s starter, tied for his fewest touchdown passes, and had his second-lowest career QB Rating. Kansas City’s offense was 17th in the regular season in yards per game and 15th in points per game. The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Houston Texans a few weeks ago winning 27-19. Mahomes was 28-of-41 with 260, a touchdown pass, and a rushing touchdown.
Final Thoughts
Even though Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense was not as potent as in years past, it would be a fool’s errand to bet against them tomorrow. They are looking to be the first team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era and will not have their quest ended by a young Texans team. The Kansas City Chiefs will be firing on all cylinders in the NFL Playoffs, and the football world will see an improved offense on Saturday afternoon. Mahomes will tie Montana with a victory tomorrow and keep the team’s chance at history alive for at least another week.
