Wide receiver Marquise Brown and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s injuries made Reid’s decision to rest his Chiefs’ starters against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night easy.  The Chiefs hope Brown can return early in the regular season after he was hospitalized for a dislocated shoulder.

Edwards-Helaire is dealing with more important things than football as training camp starts to wind down. He’s missed practices during training camp and recently opened up about his struggles with PTSD and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.

Edwards-Helaire is expected to practice this week, but it’s unclear if he will be on the active roster for Week 1. According to Nate Taylor with The Athletic, Reid called the situation with Edwards-Helaire “sensitive” and said the veteran running back was heading in the right direction:

“We’re just playing it by ear & how he feels. … We’re heading in the right direction. It’s a sensitive deal. … We’re just trying to make sure he’s comfortable & can function.”

According to Matt Derrick with Chiefs Digest, there is a possibility the Chiefs might place Edwards-Helaire on injured reserve to start the season.

Edwards-Helaire is listed as the No. 2 running back on the Chiefs depth chart. He appeared in 15 games and started in three games last season. He recorded 223 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. He also caught 17 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown last season.

Isaiah Pacheco is the clear RB1 heading into the regular season. The Chiefs also have running backs Deneric Prince, Carson Steele, Louis Rees-Zammit, Keontay Ingram, and Emani Baily on their 90-man roster. The Chiefs must trim their roster to 53 players by Aug. 27.
