The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to do something that hasn’t been done in the league since the 1960 Green Bay Packers: win three consecutive championships. As long as you have Patrick Mahomes under center, it will always seem possible.
The Chiefs have spent numerous resources this off-season to surround Mahomes with weapons as well as protection. However, it appears they officially won’t be going after one free agent any time soon (barring injury).
The Kansas City Chiefs Will Not Be Signing One Specific Free Agent
According to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest:
Starters: LT Kingsley Suamataia, LG Joe Thuney, C Creed Humphrey, RG Trey Smith and RT Jawaan Taylor
Backups: Wanya Morris, Lucas Niang, Mike Caliendo and Hunter Nourzad
Practice Squad Candidate: C.J. Hanson, Ethan Driskell and Chukwuebuka Godrick
In the mix: Nick Torres, Griffin McDowell and McKade MettauerThe battle for the left tackle position is over and Suamataia is the clear winner. Morris and Niang add depth at the tackle position while Caliendo is a reliable swing guard and Nourzad a natural backup behind Humphrey. Hanson can still find a way on this roster at the expense of a fourth running back or seventh receiver. Driskell is an intriguing project at tackle and Godrick is the team’s international exempt player who can be added as a 17th practice squad member.
How does this mean the Chiefs have backed out of a free agent signing? Kansas City has been heavily linked to veteran free agent left tackle David Bakhtiari all off-season. From the moment he was released from the Packers many figured the Chiefs would be the best destination for him.
However, the Chiefs have seemingly found their left tackle of the future and, barring any injuries, the Chiefs will have no interest in any LTs in free agency.
