The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most popular teams in the NFL. Of course, a great deal of their popularity has to do with the fact that they are back-to-back Super Bowl Champions and have won three titles in the last five seasons. They also boast Patrick Mahomes as their star quarterback, one of the best and most marketable athletes in all of sports today.
However, as popular as they were at the beginning of last season, they saw their recognition rise even more when Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce and 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift made their relationship public. Swift’s presence at Chiefs games drew millions of more viewers to the NFL and, of course, to Kansas City in particular.
Kansas City Chiefs Players Have Always Defended Taylor Swift
Not everyone was thrilled about the attention that Swift got from the media due to her attendance at Chiefs games. Even Swift herself sometimes seemed annoyed by the amount of times television cameras were pointed at her.
That being said, there were social media keyboard warriors who lashed out at Swift, the Chiefs, and the NFL for the amount of time spent covering her and Kelce. Kansas City players, though, had nothing but good things to say about her (Harrison Butker’s subtle dig at her during his commencement speech excluded, of course).
After winning the Super Bowl, wide receiver Mecole Hardman (who just re-signed with the team) discussed how awesome it was to celebrate the win with her and how much he and the other players enjoyed having her around.
Head coach Andy Reid, too, has often discussed the positive affect she has on the roster. In one interview before the 2024 NFL Draft, Reid revealed that Swift will often make baked goods for the offensive lineman, and that the team views her as a “little sister.”
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Reveals He Was a Topic of Conversation When Travis Kelce First Met Taylor Swift
By now, most everyone who follows the Chiefs and Kelce’s relationship with Swift know the story of how they met. On his New Heights podcast, which he hosts with brother Jason Kelce, Travis described how he had tried to give Swift a friendship bracelet (a token that is popular among her fanbase), but was unable to do so.
Soon after that episode aired, the two started dating. As it turns out, one of the first things they talked about was Kelce’s head coach.
During an appearance on the Y’s Guys podcast, Coach Reid revealed that his name came up early in Kelce’s first interaction with the popstar:
“Funny story, when Trav met her, she goes, ‘You know, I know your coach and his wife.’ And he goes. ‘What coach?’ She goes, ‘Coach Reid.’ And he kind of went, ‘Oh great.’
Reid then went on to explain how he had gotten to know the 14-time Grammy Award winner:
“So her father, Scott, is a Eagles fan. I met him back when I was with the Eagles. He had played football, I believe, at Delaware. And so he understands the game and gets all of that and what goes into it. And so I had met Taylor back when I was in Philadelphia.”
He also revealed that his wife, Tammy, still talks to Taylor’s father, Scott Swift, on a regular basis. Reid gushed that his wife is a real sweetheart and “everyone’s best friend.”
It sounds like if Travis had just asked his coach for an introduction, he would not have had to go through the frustration of not being able to give her that friendship bracelet.
