After winning two straight titles, the Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to make history by becoming the first team in NFL history to make a three-peat. For safety Justin Reid, though, there’s a pretty good reason why they can make it happen in the upcoming season.
Chiefs cemented their status as the NFL’s premier franchise in 2023, becoming the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots nearly two decades earlier. Despite failing to match their 14-3 record from the previous season, the Chiefs still secured an 11th consecutive winning campaign and an eighth straight AFC West division title.
In the playoffs, Kansas City made its sixth straight appearance in the AFC Championship game, this time on the road, defeating the Baltimore Ravens to advance to its fourth Super Bowl in five years. There, the Chiefs faced a rematch with the San Francisco 49ers, the team they had vanquished two years prior. In a thrilling overtime affair, Kansas City prevailed 25-22, their defense playing a pivotal role by limiting their high-powered playoff opponents to just 15.8 points per game.
With superstar Patrick Mahomes continuing to excel at quarterback, the Chiefs have cemented their status as a modern NFL dynasty, joining the elite company of the Tom Brady-led Patriots. Kansas City’s sustained excellence has made them the class of the league and the team to beat for the foreseeable future.
Safety Justin Reid Reveals Reason Why Kansas City Chiefs Can Go for a Three-Peat
Just recently, Reid appeared in an episode of Green Light with Chris Long to talk about his stint with the Chiefs and other topics. He also revealed the reason why Kansas City has a good chance to go for a third straight title this season.
“I’ve also been on teams like that earlier in my career, that we’ve been successful and just assume it’s going to be the same way and then in the next year you get steamrolled. [The most important thing is] that our leadership has been very critical, very determined, very detailed in the approach of not allowing that to creep in. Myself, Chris Jones, Mahomes, Kelce––when your leaders don’t relax and when your leaders are still pushing the issue and don’t allow us to say, ‘Hey, this just happens naturally’ then everyone else kind of falls in line.
But if your leaders take their foot off the pedal, then everyone else will too. So I think that we’re fortunate in that the mentality of this team is really strong… Spagnuolo had a top two defense before and the next year they are 27th –– he’s been driving that home almost daily,” Reid said.
Even though the Chiefs enter the upcoming season as defending champs, they’ll face stiffer competition from every other contender in the NFL. With these teams making key moves to become better, Kansas City’s championship bid may be harder than expected.
Even if that’s the case, the mentality instilled by the team’s leaders will go a long way for the Chiefs this season. If they can keep that mindset, there’s a good chance history will be made by Mahomes and company.
