'Josh Allen 2.0': Patriots players unsurprised by Drake Maye's late-game heroics

The New England Patriots needed a miracle in the final moments of regulation during Sunday's game against the Titans.

And Drake Maye provided that.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (10) runs the ball against the Tennessee Titans during the first quarter at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024.

While the team did not come out on top in overtime, this single play will be talked about for a while. And it gave fans a lot of hope for the future.

However, while everyone watching couldn't believe what they saw, cornerback Christian Gonzalez's comments after the game shows just how much faith they have in their quarterback.

“That’s Drake. Nobody was surprised, honestly," he told reporters. "He makes plays like that all the time.”

With only four seconds remaining on the clock and the Patriots down by seven, Drake Maye knew that he needed to get the ball in the end zone. As time expired, Maye dropped back, running back and forth to avoid the Titans pass rush. It was more than 11 seconds before he floated the ball into the end zone and right to the hands of running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

While he made other mistakes in the game, which any rookie will do in their first year, it was clear that he impressed his teammates.

"That's young Josh Allen 2.0," defensive tackle Davon Godchaux told reporters in the locker room.

And even Titans DT Jeffrey Simmons couldn't believe what he saw.

He said that he "sought out Drake Maye after the game to tell him 'he’s going to be a hell of a player,' per The Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Here are some more reactions from Drake Maye's teammates:

Head Coach Jerod Mayo
"
Mental toughness and the ability to make plays with his legs, which he has shown before. He gave us a chance to win the game.”

TE Hunter Henry
That guy’s special… Proud of him. Proud of his fight.”

WR Kendrick Bourne
“Drake is just phenomenal and he keeps showing that week in and week out. I’m very proud of him.”

“He’s resilient, but that was different…that might be the longest play I’ve ever been a part of.”

RB Rhamondre Stevenson
“I love Drake. He’s doing his thing.”
