A regime that's no longer running the New York Jets made speedy wide receiver Malachi Corley a third-round pick during this year's draft, but the rookie has largely been a non-factor throughout the season as quarterback Aaron Rodgers has targeted proven commodities such as Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams and Allen Lazard during games.
Jets offensive play-caller Todd Downing spoke with reporters on Thursday and indicated Corley can emerge as a playmaker for the Jets even though the 22-year-old has "certainly gone through the season wanting more opportunities" through 16 weeks of action.
"Malachi's got a bright future in this league and he's got a skill set that will eventually help teams win football games," Downing said, as shared by Ben Krimmel of SNY. "Right now, though, he's fighting to get the scraps from Davante and [Wilson] and Allen and so on. I think he’s learning to be a pro."
Corley impressed onlookers during training camp workouts but thus far has appeared in just eight games and has recorded a paltry three receptions for 16 yards to go along with 26 rushing yards on two carries. The "highlight" of his debut campaign involved him shockingly dropping the ball short of the goal line during New York's win over the Houston Texans on Halloween night.
Corley's rookie season has also included the firings of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, not to mention offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett being stripped of his play-calling duties. As for the upcoming offseason, it remains to be seen if a new coaching staff will ask Rodgers to stick around for another year. Adams presumably could follow Rodgers out the door if the club goes in a different direction regarding the sport's most important position, and Wilson reportedly could ask to be traded.
It makes sense Downing said on Thursday the Jets are "gonna do what we feel puts us in the best position to compete and win games" rather than use the final two contests of the season to evaluate young talents such as Corley. After all, Downing realizes he likely won't coach Corley again after Week 18 concludes.
"Malachi happens to be in a room that has a lot of talent ahead of him on the depth chart," Downing added. "That being said, I think he’s got some pros in front of him that he’s got a chance to learn from."
History suggests fans shouldn't expect to see Corley be targeted much, if at all, during Sunday's game at the 12-3 Buffalo Bills. Then again, perhaps Downing's comments will attract Rodgers' attention ahead of the weekend.
