I’m not sure if you have heard yet, but the New York Jets acquired Davante Adams this week in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. It was kind of a big deal.
After the Jets’ disastrous loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night, Aaron Rodgers woke up Tuesday morning with a new receiver on the way, and it is the one he has been pining over for years since the two parted ways from Green Bay. Rodgers has instant chemistry with Adams and trusts him completely.
But what about the receivers already on the team? Rodgers still has trust in Allen Lazard, though I can’t think of any reason why he would, considering Lazard already has three drops on the year in six games. Garrett Wilson leads the NFL in targets this season so far with 67 (nine more than the next highest player), so he is likely still going to see a fair share of passes thrown his way. Malachi Corley and Xavier Gipson are non-factors thus far in the passing game. But what about Mike Williams?
Williams came under scrutiny this week when Rodgers seemed to call him out in the post game press conference for running the wrong route, or at least not being where he was supposed to be on the final offensive play of the game for the Jets.
After Rodgers’ comments and the trade for Davante Adams, many believe that Williams’ days in New York are numbered. There are a lot of rumors floating that Williams is available for trade for wide receiver needy teams and there has even reportedly been some calls from teams like the Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Williams was not seen at practice Wednesday and Thursday as the Jets try and get ready to face the Steelers on a short week further fanning the flames that the former first round pick was on his was out. But Williams was spotted on Friday practicing along with the other receivers, including newly acquired Davante Adams.
Williams was asked if he wants to be traded from the Jets to a place where he’ll have more opportunities and he said, “I am where my feet are”. That is as ambiguous of an answer as you can give.
Williams is still very talented, and I would be in no rush to move him from the team. While his chemistry isn’t there with Rodgers yet, and it just became harder for him to develop that chemistry, there is no denying the talent. Adams has already missed some time this year with a hamstring injury. Wilson has been hit hard on a few plays. Having someone of Williams’ talent around can’t hurt for a team that is trying to turn their season around.
The Jets are already changing so much this season, including firing their head coach and replacing their offensive coordinator and bringing in another star wide receiver in Adams.
The NFL trade deadline is still a few weeks away, and until the Jets are really out of it, I wouldn’t be in any rush to move talent from the team.
