With the 2025-26 NFL season inching closer, teams will shift focus to sorting out their rosters and preparing for the year ahead. The New York Jets, however, are ironing out contract details with one of their star players in the meantime.
Per a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, New York and wide receiver Garrett Wilson have agreed to terms on a massive contract extension. Wilson and the Jets are in it for the long haul.
ESPN sources: Jets and wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached agreement on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed. It marks the first time in NFL history that a receiver has received an average over $31 million after playing only three
Garrett Wilson’s Contract Details With Jets Revealed
“Jets and wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached agreement on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed,” Schefter posted on X. “It marks the first time in NFL history that a receiver has received an average over $31 million after playing only three seasons. Wilson now will be under contract the next six seasons, through 2030. Agents Jeff Nalley and Graylan Crain of CAA negotiated the deal with Jets executives Nick Sabella and Darren Mougey.”
With the initial reporting from Schefter of a $32.5M average annual value (AAV) in totality, Wilson is in tremendous company. Among current receivers, only Ja’Marr Chase ($40.25M), Justin Jefferson ($35M), CeeDee Lamb ($34M) and DK Metcalf ($33M) are on the books for higher AAV figures.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media added some critical details. According to Rapoport, the $90M in guaranteed money is the fourth-largest such figure for a wideout. Additonally, Wilson will have a $13.75M signing bonus with option bonuses of $20M and $10M in years two and three, respectively. It’s a downright massive contract.
Wilson being under contract for the next six campaigns is a serious win for New York. They need stability on offense, and him having a full-circle moment by tying himself to the franchise’s future is undoubtedly a big deal for the fan base. Still just 24 years old, most of Wilson’s prime is now set to coincide with his Jets contract.
Wilson Set to Lead New York’s Effort to Rebound on Offense
It’s no secret that Wilson is one of the Jets’ most promising building blocks. Since going 10th overall back in 2022, he’s accomplished a ton in the league. Wilson has three straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons under his belt already. That, paired with 279 career receptions and 14 touchdowns, makes him the unquestioned leader of the receiver room.
Wilson’s 2024-25 effort solidified this new deal. Playing in all 17 regular-season games (again), he hauled in 101 passes for 1,104 yards and 7 touchdowns. Those were all personal bests. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the No. 22-ranked wideout on the year. That’s despite a less-than-ideal fit with former quarterback Aaron Rodgers, too.
As the Jets usher in the Justin Fields era under center, Wilson will be the go-to piece on offense. New York’s set of playmakers isn’t praised around the league. Players like Tyler Johnson indicate that the receiver room is competing hard to improve but on paper, there’s a lot to be desired. Wilson headlines a unit that otherwise contains names such as Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard.
In the modern NFL, teams must pony up to keep their stars. Now, Wilson is one step closer to being a Jet for life like he wants to be. It’s the best outcome for everyone involved.
