Justin Fields agreeing to sign with the New York Jets in free agency sparked much excitement among Ohio State Buckeyes fans thrilled about his reunion with Garrett Wilson.
Now in addition to throwing the ball to two of his old Buckeyes targets in Wilson and tight end Jeremy Ruckert, Fields could also be lining up behind the man from whom he took snaps during his time with Ohio State.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler , the Jets have agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with former Buckeyes center Josh Myers.
Myers was the starter at center for each of Fields' two seasons as the quarterback in Columbus in 2019 and 2020.
He went on to be selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, going 61 picks after Fields, who went to the Chicago Bears with the 11th overall selection.
As was the case with Fields and the Bears, Myers did not earn a second contract from the Packers and clearly did not have a robust market in free agency given the deal he signed with the Jets.
Joe Tippmann was the starting center for the Jets last season. The 2023 second-round pick out of Wisconsin played in all 17 games.
Myers now comes in as competition under new head coach Aaron Glenn. He may face an uphill battle to displace Tippmann but, even if he doesn't, Fields' familiarity with his potential backup center should make life easier for the Jets if they have injury issues at that crucial spot in the offense.
