Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets in action against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on January 5, 2025.
Garrett Wilson is one of the New York Jets‘ bona fide superstars, and his new offensive coordinator recently shared what makes him so great.
First-year offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand shared how Wilson is progressing in his offense and the partnership between the Jets’ star wideout and former Ohio State teammate, quarterback Justin Fields.
Engstrand joined the Jets after spending the past five seasons alongside current Jets coach Aaron Glenn with the Detroit Lions.
During his time with the Lions, Engstrand had superstar-caliber wideouts like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. But the new OC has found Wilson a treat to coach already.
“Garrett is a very instinctual player, and there is a fine line to being overly instinctual, if you will, but being able to get to where he needs to be at the time that he needs to be there,” Engstrand said during mandatory minicamp, according to the Jets website. “Clearly an elite athlete and we’re looking forward to him continuing to get a hold and a grasp of this offense and take it to the next level.”
Wilson has not had much continuity with the Jets over his first three seasons. Engstrand will be his third offensive coordinator, and Wilson has caught passes from eight different quarterbacks.
But that has not affected Wilson’s productivity, since the 10th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft has 279 catches for 3,249 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career. Engstrand has already seen Wilson’s evolution in his offense, even though it is brand new.
“He’s continuing to improve every single day and learn the way that we want to run the routes all the time without taking his creativity away,” Engstrand said, “Just him learning when he needs to be in certain places at certain times because that’s where the quarterback expects him to be.”
It shouldn’t surprise Jets fans to hear that Wilson will fit right in with the culture being set by Glenn.
“Culture is all about people. So, you bring the right people in the building, that determines what kind of culture you’re going to have,” Glenn said. ” I give the guys before this regime, before we got here, credit because we don’t have any bad guys. I think we have a bunch of good guys on this team. So, I give those guys a lot of credit for the guys they have here.”
Despite Wilson’s continued excellence, the Jets have gone 19-32 in his three seasons and not had an offense finish better than 24th in points per game. But Glenn, who spent eight of his 15 NFL seasons with the Jets, is continuing to breed optimism with his methodology and ability to change the culture in Detroit.
“Now our job is to make sure we steer them in the right direction, the way that we want to play football, the way that we want to operate, the way we want this building to be,” Glenn said. “To me, that’s what culture is.”
