Jets bust has been ‘outstanding,’ and new coach wants him to make ‘millions’

Ex-Jets quarterback Zach Wilson appears to be making strides with his new team and has made an impression on the coaching staff.

According to The Athletic’s Chase Daniels, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is all in on the Jets bust.

“He’s got him playing with more confidence and energy than he ever has,” Daniels wrote in a Threads post, accompanied by video of Payton doting on Wilson.

“I grabbed him and I said ‘Look, I just want you to focus on having fun and playing,” Payton said. “My job is to make you millions either with us or for another team. His last two weeks have been outstanding.”

The Jets believed they’d found their franchise quarterback when they selected Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Broncos in April for a late-draft pick swap, joining Jarrett Stidham and 12th overall pick Bo Nix in the quarterback room.

Wilson threw his first touchdown pass with the Broncos in Sunday’s 27-2 preseason win over the Packers. He went 2-for-6 for 29 yards and was sacked twice for a loss of 13 yards, including one for a safety.

During his time with the Jets, Wilson threw 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 34 games and had a 12-21 record. He suffered knee injuries in each of his first two years and was thrown into the fire after Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles just four snaps into last season.
