The New York Jets got their second straight win of the season against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football. They dominated New England from the jump, winning the game by a score of 24-3.
Within, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked very much like his old self. He threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns to help his team get the big divisional win.
One of his touchdown passes went to star wide receiver Garrett Wilson and with that, an unbelievable streak finally was broken. The pass caught by Wilson for the score was the first time in Rodgers's long career that he threw a touchdown pass to a former first-round draft pick wide receiver.
Rodgers has played 20 seasons and has now thrown 480 touchdowns in his career. But this one was special.
The veteran signal-caller has played with plenty of talented players during his career, making this more interesting. But while he was with the Green Bay Packers, the franchise never took a wideout in the first round of the draft.
Despite numerous calls for the Packers to add more talent to their receiving core, Green Bay's front office held firm on their desire to hold off. The team did draft multiple wide receivers in the second round, including the best wideout that Rodgers has played with, Davante Adams.
Part of the reason why Rodgers was so frustrated with the Packers was due to their unwillingness to upgrade his offensive weapons. In the 2020 NFL Draft, Green Bay had a chance to grab a wide receiver but instead elected to take quarterback Jordan Love in the first round.
While Love has now become the team's starting quarterback, the Packers missed out on the chance to draft both Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman Jr., both of which went early in the second round. This decision started the discontent from Rodgers toward the Packers organization, leading to their eventual parting of ways.
Now with the Jets, Rodgers has his former first-round wideout and he is determined to help him grow as a player. Wilson is a very talented wide receiver and under the leadership of Rodgers, he should continue to develop.
New York is off to a good start, especially with Rodgers just coming back from an Achilles injury. The four-time MVP will look to continue the winning ways when the Jets host the Denver Broncos next week.
