Jayson Tatum reveals untold pact with Derrick White after Hawks win

The Celtics rolled into Monday’s game against the Hawks looking to finish their four-game road trip strong. They did that and some as they dominated in a 123-93 win over the Hawks to get to 7-1 early on this season.

White and Tatum

As part of the win, C’s star Jayson Tatum wore a head band, which is a rare look at this point in his career. Derrick White also had on a head band, and as it turns out, the two matching was actually by design.

“I used to wear hand bands a lot, but it‘s a thing between me and D-White,” Tatum said, via NBC Sports Boston. “Where we did it a few times last year and the year before that. And we have an agreement between the two of us.

“On a random day, one of us walks in and we‘re like, ’Yo, we gotta wear a hand band today,' the other one gotta agree. I made the call today. So I’ll be waiting for him to tell me the next time we gotta wear a hand band.”

So next time Tatum and White are both wearing head bands, it‘ll likely be because White decided that’s what they wanted to go with. The head band looked like it worked well Monday for Tatum — especially early on. Tatum put up 26 points in the first half to help the Celtics put up 75 points in the first half, including a 6-for-10 showing from 3-point land. White had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists as he’s continued his strong start to the season.

The Celtics have cruised to their strong start to the season thus far. There have been some close games, but Monday was already the sixth time in eight games the C’s won by double-digits. That was also the first time this season the Celtics have won by at least 30 points. The C’s now have the Warriors coming up at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in what should be a highly-anticipated matchup.

“Just trying to read the game,” Tatum said. “We generate good shots more often than not for each other. I‘m always on the court with some really talented guys. We know how to play off of each other. So it‘s just a matter of reading the game and trying to attack the disadvantage that they have or whoever we’re trying to go after on defense.”
