The Washington Capitals hold a 1-0 series lead as they enter Game 2 of the playoffs against the Montreal Canadiens on April 23.
While the Canadiens forced Game 1 into overtime, Capitals star Alex Ovechkin led Washington to a 3-2 win by scoring his first-ever playoff overtime goal. Ovechkin, however refused to hype up his personal career feat. "A goal is a goal,” he said.
Heading into Game 2, the Capitals have extra star power cheering them on at the Capital One Arena on Wednesday night. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, along with backups, Marcus Mariota and Sam Hartman, sat in the front row to support the Capitals.
Daniels, who led the Commanders to their first NFC Championship game since 1991 during his rookie season, received a standing ovation from the home crowd..
Daniels gave Ovechkin a shoutout when he broke Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record with career goal No. 895 earlier this month.
"Man, it is just a testament to what you do, the work that you put in, the consistency that you have year in and year out,' he said in the congratulatory video message. "Man, keep putting on. You are a DC legend, man. Hopefully, one day I can be up there with you. You're an inspiration to all."
Daniels, rocking an Ovechkin jersey, appeared to have the best time cheering for the Caps with Mariota and Hartman, the latter of whom hilariously chugged his beer when the trio was shown on the jumbotron.
While the 24-year-old superstar was swarmed by Washington fans, Daniels didn't shy away from the attention.
106.7 The Fan's Grant Paulson posted, "Daniels hung out in the lower bowl and took pictures for the entire period. Crowd descended upon him. He was cool as a cucumber. Pretty awesome move."
One fan commented, "I love how humble and gracious he is." Another person wrote, "He always has time for his fans. So humble." One man added, "Jayden Daniels is a true man of the people."
