Jaxson Dart enters NFL offseason with everything to prove and no room to slip

The NY Giants hopefully found their quarterback of the future in Jaxson Dart after moving back into the first round to nab him with the 25th pick. There's certainly a lot to like about Dart but Brian Daboll has made it clear that Russell Wilson will be the Giants starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

The Giants also signed Jameis Winston in the offseason, meaning Dart isn't the lock to be the backup quarterback. NFL insider Albert Breer compared the Giants' quarterback situation to that of the Browns' quarterback situation where both teams have several veteran quarterbacks but have added at least one rookie into the mix as well.

Breer discussed how he ultimately saw things playing out for the Giants (and Browns) and the answer doesn't bode well for Dart.

"Well, I think through the spring, you give the veterans a chance to compete. I think it's tough to take reps away from veterans who are learning new receivers," Breer said. "Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are both new to Brian Daboll and to their teammates there, so those guys need the work this spring."

Albert Breer gives quarterback answer that NY Giants fans might not like

As for what will happen with the rookies (in the Giants' case, Dart), Breer had a solution for that as well.

"Well, you give them a chance to compete. And I think for those guys what they do in the spring is gonna be really important because by the time you get to the summer, you really want to kind of have an idea of who's legitimately in the competition to start in September."

As annoying as it is for Giants fans to admit, this is the correct path for the team to take. Dart is hopefully going to this team's starting quarterback for the next decade plus and in order to get him prepared to do just that, letting him sit behind Wilson (and Winston) to start the year is the right move. He needs to be able to learn the offense and not be thrown to the wolves right from the jump.

Of course, if Dart balls out this summer and manages to pry the starting job away from Wilson (or Winston), then clearly he's ahead of the curve and ready to rock and roll. In all likelihood though, letting one of the other signal callers start the season as QB1 is the best route and should hopefully allow Dart to develop properly.
