Heading into the 2025 season, things are shaping up to be a bridge year for the New York Giants. That said, depending on how things unfold in training camp, the next phase of the franchise could begin sooner than initially anticipated.
Following an offseason full of new additions, the biggest storyline for the Giants is the quarterback position. After parting with Daniel Jones last year, the front office has brought in veteran talent and youth to hold things down under center. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were signed in free agency, and Jaxson Dart was brought in following a draft night trade from New York.
It's evident what the game plan is for the Giants at QB. With Wilson and Winston on one-year deals, they'll be taking most of the reps on the field while Dart develops in year one behind the scenes. The touted prospect will then take the reins and attempt to become the Giants' future at quarterback in 2026. However, Dart could potentially speed up that timeline.
In a recent column for Bleacher Report, Damian Parson listed a handful of rookies who have the most to gain from performing well in training camp. Among those brought up was the Giants' newest QB prospect.
"Wilson and Winston are truly bridge/stop-gap quarterbacks. Unless one of them lights it up this season, it is not out of the realm of possibility that Dart gets his first NFL start in 2025," Parson wrote. "If Dart performs at a high enough level, the veteran quarterbacks' leashes will be shorter than expected. Let them deal with the gauntlet on their schedule early in the season. Give Dart more time to sit, learn and grow before stepping on the field. Dart's training camp will either speed up his timeline to play meaningful snaps or reinforce that he needs time adjusting to the pros."
Dart turned heads in minicamp, which bodes well for him holding his own when training camp gets underway next week. If he can continue to impress, the Giants might have no choice but to get him on the field sooner.
Seeing that the veterans are on one-year deals, it seems more like a matter of when, not if, Dart will start games for the Giants this season. How things go in camp will be a better indicator of when the franchise decides to hand him the reins.
