Jaxon Smith-Njigba chasing Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf single-season franchise records

JSN is on pace to break Tyler Lockett’s franchise record, with DK Metcalf’s record in sight as well.

Seattle Seahawks fans may look back at 2023-2024 as a rare era in franchise history, specifically looking at the wide receiver position. The top three receivers for Seattle during these two years are DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, the last one mentioned may already be on pace to be the best of the three receivers. In fact, for 2024, Smith-Njigba has a very realistic shot at breaking both the Seahawks single season receiving yards record and the single season receptions record.

Currently, Metcalf holds the single season receiving yards record at 1,303 yards (back in 2020). Meanwhile, Smith-Njigba is currently at 994 yards. That’s only 309 yards shy of the record with three games to go. Meaning, for Smith-Njigba to break this record, he would have to average 103 yards per game. Now that is easier said than done, but still very attainable.

Smith-Njigba may be even closer to breaking the single season receptions record. Lockett currently holds this record with 100 receptions, also back in 2020. Smith-Njigba currently has 85, only 16 catches away from breaking the record. That means for Smith-Njigba to break the record he needs to average just above five catches a game.

To put into perspective how attainable these records are, let’s look at what Smith-Njigba is averaging each game. Through 14 games, Smith-Njigba is averaging 71 yards/game and six receptions/game. If we break this down to only since Week 9, Smith Njigba is averaging 101 yards/game and seven receptions/game.

Big picture, if Smith-Njigba maintains his pace from Week 9 onward, he will easily break Lockett’s record, and he will get awfully close to breaking Metcalf’s receiving yards records. If he can accomplish this in the next three weeks (vs Minnesota Vikings, @ Chicago Bears, and @ Los Angeles Rams) then Smith-Njigba’s 2024 season would go down as the best statistical season ever in terms of yards and receptions for a Seattle Seahawks wide receiver.

All of this in only his second year in the league.
