Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley and team owner Jeffrey Lurie went on a golf outing with former U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday at Merion Golf Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania.
“Kind of like an uncle figure out there,” Hurts said on Wednesday of spending time with the former president. “President Obama, all-time leader. A great presence. I guess the word is down-to-earth. I can only imagine that lifestyle and the different things that come with that, but nonetheless, to see him out there enjoying himself and talking a little trash, that was cool. I told him he didn’t want these problems just yet. I told him I can’t golf right now. By contract, I can’t golf. But his day will come.”
While Barkley and Lurie played a round with the former president, Hurts walked the course. In training camp, the former Alabama quarterback had said Lurie would not allow him to play golf, calling it a story for another time.
“It’s still not the time to tell the story,” Hurts said on Wednesday.
In an interview with Time last year, Hurts had listed Obama among six people he would like to invite to dinner, which would feature a crawfish boil.
“I like to keep it as intimate as possible,” Hurts said of his guest list, “but I think that’s just a blessing in my young time to be able to establish the handful of individuals I’d love to meet and kind of be complete after that. I’ve met some, and we’ve lost some to father time, but the only one left is Denzel Washington.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for those guys. Every time I’ve been able to speak with them and be in their presence, it’s always been a fruitful conversation. Nothing aimless about it. I felt like I left their presence a better person, a wiser person. Honestly, I hope to have the same impact on them, too.”
The other guests on Hurts’ dream list were Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Muhammad Ali and Frankie Beverly.
