The search for Tom Thibodeau’s replacement remains a hot topic throughout the NBA landscape. The decision to part ways with the veteran coach surprised many observers across the basketball community.
Thibodeau’s dismissal shocked fans and analysts alike, particularly after he guided the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000.
The timing of his departure raised questions about the franchise’s championship expectations.
Former Knicks player Derek Harper expressed his surprise at the organization’s decision during a recent podcast.
Harper believes the move could backfire on the franchise given their recent success under Thibodeau’s leadership.
Derek Harper questions Tom Thibodeau’s dismissal
“I was surprised they let Thibodeau go. I considered it a successful season, getting all the way to the Conference Finals,” Harper explained. The former guard emphasized the uncertainty facing New York moving forward.
“One thing I saw about next year, there’s no guarantee you get back,” he added, referencing the challenge of maintaining championship-level performance.
Despite his initial shock, Harper’s outlook improved significantly after learning about potential coaching candidates. Reports linking Jason Kidd to the vacancy have generated optimism among former players and fans.
Harper likes the idea of Jason Kidd emerging as front-runner for Knicks job
The connection between Jason Kidd and Knicks star Jalen Brunson could prove crucial in New York’s coaching search. Their previous relationship in Dallas provides a foundation for immediate success in the Big Apple.
“A player’s coach, allows players to be themselves, I think that’s what success is to coach now, removing your ego. He has zero ego. I give Jason Kidd a lot of credit for the development of Jalen Brunson.”
The former Knicks guard believes Kidd’s mentorship was instrumental in Brunson’s development during their time together with the Mavericks.
“I really think that playing under J Kidd, Jalen really learned and grew as a point guard. He was already good, two championships in college, but there’s something about playing under the greatness of Jason Kidd.”

Trade complications could derail pursuit
Securing Kidd’s services won’t be straightforward for the Knicks organization. Reports suggest New York lacks significant bargaining power in potential negotiations with Dallas for their current head coach.
However, some believe the Mavericks might allow Kidd to pursue the opportunity, potentially starting fresh with a completely new coaching staff.
This would be good for both franchises and let Kidd lead the team he knows well with a star he’s already familiar with.
