“It’s Out of His Hands;” 41-Year-Old Green Bay Packers Fan Favorite Has Talked to Matt LaFleur About Possible Reunion

Following the 2022 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers decided to make some drastic changes to their roster. Of course, the most notable of these was trading four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets so that Jordan Love could take over as the starter. This move initiated a massive youth movement on the team that saw Green Bay bid adieu to several long-time fan-favorite players.

Wide receivers like Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb were allowed to depart in free agency, and were replaced by Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Similarly, the Packers opted not to re-sign Mason Crosby, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, and drafted Anders Carlson to replace him.

Of course, the tight end position was another one that saw a facelift, with Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave being drafted to replace Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan.

Including the 2022 season, Lewis spent five years with the Packers. Prior to that, he enjoyed 12 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including his only career Pro Bowl in 2010.

During his five years in Green Bay, Lewis caught 57 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns. While he was not a big receiving threat, he acted as a bonus lineman, oftentimes tasked with blocking opponents’ toughest pass rushers.

Following his stint with the Packers, Lewis signed with the Chicago Bears, with whom he has played for the past two seasons.

Now 41 years old, he has already set the NFL record for most seasons played by a tight end. However, he wants to reach an even 20 years before he calls it a career, which means that 2025 will be his last season. That is, if he can find a team that wants to sign him.

Now a free agent, Lewis does not have a big market for his services. However, he was one of the NFL’s best pass and run blockers last season, even though he was playing in his age 40 season.

On Thursday, Lewis revealed to Kay Adams that he has been talking to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur about a potential return to Green Bay:

“I know that the last year when I was there, they were close to bringing me back for another year before I signed with Chicago. But the direction that they were going was going to be young.

“And obviously, Matt [LaFleur] is one of my best friends there, and he was Face Timing me last week and we were kind of talking about it [a potential return to Green Bay], but it’s really out of his hands.”

While Lewis was a fan-favorite with the Packers, it is hard to see how a 41-year-old tight end would fit on the youngest roster in the league. Kraft and Musgrave dominate snaps offensively, and it would be difficult to justify taking away their playing time for Lewis.
