It's only minicamp but Russell Wilson is back to his old tricks (in the worst way)

At some point, saying the same words over and over again makes them become meaningless. Maybe at first, the words are meant to be inspirational or, in the case of quarterback Russell Wilson, allow his team to become more of a community. But as Seattle Seahawks fans know, robotic Wilson gets stale quickly.

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson

The problem is that his actions have spoken louder than his words. He wants to seem like he is simply a member of an organization, and doesn't see himself as above the team. His actions in Seattle said otherwise as he tried to get then-head coach Pete Carroll fired, as well as general manager John Schneider.

After the Seahawks tired of his selfishness, he was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he demanded to have his own office. He might have said he was team-first, but he was Russ-first. He likely will become the same way with his new team, the New York Giants.

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson breaking out his old tricks

Wilson is already back to his old tricks. He is talking up how good the Giants' culture is, though there is certainly no proof of this over the last few seasons, and how quickly the team is improving.

Speaking after minicamp practice this week, Wilson said, "I just think that we're just on this constant growth of trajectory and we've got to stay there. I think that we've grown so much every day. The team, the team, the team, the team. I think we have just gotten better and better every day. Offense, defense, special teams. I think our camaraderie has been amazing."

Yawn.

If this was some kind of new approach for the former Seahawks quarterback, great. It might imply he learned his lesson after being booted from the Broncos after two seasons, even though it cost Denver tens of millions of dollars in dead cap, and after he wasn't welcomed back by the Pittsburgh Steelers after a one-year stay.

The Steelers know well the two sides of Wilson. With the Steelers, he spoke highly of the culture, as if words are what ultimately matter in the NFL. He then led the team to five straight losses to end the season. That is what truly matters.

The Giants are not going to be good this year. Even if their roster was greatly improved, which it isn't, they are still in a terribly difficult division. The NFC East takes no prisoners, and the Giants are obviously the worst team in the division.

Hopefully, Wilson understands his situation. He could be playing for his final team. Few others are willing to give him a chance to start, and even New York chose a quarterback (Jaxson Dart) in the first round after signing Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency. The Giants are looking for long-term success from Wilson. They just need him to be a bridge to Dart.

The problem for Wilson, if he indeed does earn the starting gig, is that his perceived optimism and positive words will be viewed as fake by the New York press. He might be in the worst possible environment for him, and 2025 could be his final season.
