Is This Rookie the Eagles New Defensive Star?

When Bryce Huff went down with a wrist injury requiring surgery last month, few expected rookie Jalyx Hunt to fill the void so seamlessly. Yet, the third-round pick's impressive emergence has created an intriguing situation for the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive front - a complication - as Huff inches closer to returning.

Is This Rookie the Eagles New Defensive Star?

Although Huff’s 21-day practice window has opened, the veteran edge rusher has been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders. Wearing a cast that will remain for the rest of the season, Huff has participated only in limited practice sessions this week.

Meanwhile, Hunt continues to thrive in an expanded role. The former Cornell safety turned edge rusher has logged at least 38 percent of defensive snaps over the past four games, recording 0.5 sacks and six tackles. His rapid improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed by his teammates.

Hunt’s contributions extend beyond game-day performances. Earlier this season, he mimicked Myles Garrett’s explosive first step in practice to help prepare Jordan Mailata for the Browns’ star pass rusher. The preparation paid off, with Garrett held without a sack in Philadelphia’s 20-16 victory.

Huff, who signed a three-year deal worth up to $51.1 million in free agency, faces an uphill battle to reclaim his spot. Before his injury, Huff’s playing time had already diminished, and his production—2.5 sacks and 10 tackles in 10 games—hasn’t lived up to expectations.

For Hunt, the journey from Cornell safety to NFL edge rusher has been nothing short of remarkable.  With the Eagles boasting the league’s top-ranked defense, Hunt’s continued growth could force tough decisions about playing time as Huff works his way back. For now, the rookie is focused on making the most of every opportunity while Huff remains on the road to recovery.
