The New York Jets took a big swing two years ago, landing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers with the hope of turning their already-strong roster into Super Bowl contenders.
While the move ultimately fell flat as Rodgers missed the 2023 season with a torn Achilles and failed to improve the team's chances in 2024, the Jets may be ready for another veteran to take over at quarterback.
Matthew Berry of NBC Sports reported that the Jets have come up with a succession plan for Rodgers, leaning on last year's backup quarterback to take the helm while a long-term replacement develops behind him.
"As long as we are talking New York QBs, I know there have been rumors of the Jets also trading up in the draft," Berry wrote. "But for what it’s worth, the plan that I heard was that Tyrod Taylor would be the Jets’ opening day starter and the Jets would draft a developmental QB to learn from Tyrod."
The 35-year-old Taylor has plenty of experience, starting 43 games for the Buffalo Bills between 2015 and 2017 and helping the team break its 17-year playoff drought.
While Berry didn't hear just who the Jets had in mind to develop behind Taylor, he suggested Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe would be a strong fit.
"Milroe is aware that he is not a finished product and needs a lot of work," Berry wrote. "But, as is typical of a lot of kids coached by Nick Saban, he is focused, serious, and dedicated.
"Given his physical ability, if he gets into the right system, has the right mentor, and can sit for a year or two… watch out."
