When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams and the 2025 NFL Draft, far too many articles and mock drafts have placed a rookie quarterback prospect on the Rams roster, to end up in the category of wild speculation. The team has met with at least three quarterback prospects before the upcoming draft, and likely more than that. You don't meet with a realtor unless you are in the market to buy a house. The Rams' choice to meet with quarterbacks is a clear indication of the obvious: The team is comparative shopping.
But being in the market is not a slam dunk conclusion. The right rookie prospect has to be on the draft board when the team can select them. In a draft class with more demand than supply, that will still be a tough act to pull off.
But the entire 'Will the Rams draft a quarterback?' dilemma was addressed directly by Sports Illustrated Rams beat writer Brock Vierra. Vierra had an opportunity to pose the question to Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay in a recent article. His response was predictable, if not exactly believable.
Brock Vierra: Are you interested in adding a quarterback through the draft?
"I think that is unlikely. I will be honest with you, I have not done a whole lot of work on the quarterbacks. I feel really good about where our quarterback room is, even though we are not naive to the fact that Matthew [Stafford] hopefully got a couple more years that he wants to play.Rams HC Sean McVay
But he has also earned the right to be able to say, after this year, hey, I am gonna
go ahead and hang them up, but I am hopeful that that is not the case, but I have not done enough work to really have an educated opinion on that.
That is not something that I would see us going, but maybe not."
McVay has never been caught not having done his homework about anything related to football. It's a running joke among Rams players that Coach McVay's passion for professional football triggers no shortage of words about plays, schemes, strategy, or anything else related to the game.
Any representation that McVay does not have his arms around every rookie quarterback prospect who may or may not be on the Rams' radar in the 2025 NFL Draft is funny, but not believable. McVay does not leave anything to chance, and his ability to instantly recall a play from his playbook or a player's history is legendary.
So, don't take the bait of believing that he has not studied up on rookie quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft. He is more likely to tip off other NFL teams as soon as he starts his conversation about rookie quarterbacks, so he wisely chose to avoid the topic at all costs.
McVay's ability to talk about QB Jaxson Darts final throw in college, or QB Shedeur Sander's first touchdown pass is not something that he needs to prepare to discuss. The only aspect of the interview that is believable is the fact that Sean McVay is not going to tip the Rams' strategy at drafting a rookie quarterback.
The Rams have many solid quarterback options at their disposal, and could draft one on Day 1, 2, or 3. You can bet that GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay can talk about every one of them at length. The Rams may not select a quarterback in Round 1 or 3. But don't buy for a second that Coach McVay cannot talk intelligently about any of them.
He knows them all. And we all know Coach McVay. His response tends to make me suspect that the team has adding a quarterback in this year's draft as a high priority.
As always, thank you for reading.
