'I'm excited' - Deuce Vaughn makes telling comment about direction of Dallas Cowboys offense under new coaching staff

When the Dallas Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer to be their next head coach, one concern immediately popped into the minds of fans: If he was the offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024, how much change can we expect?

Some fans and media members sustain it won't be much, if any. Running back Deuce Vaughn hinted at the scheme being different in a recent appearance on the Up and Adams Show hosted by Kay Adams.

Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn (42) goes through a drill during practice at the Ford Center at the Star Training Facility in Frisco, Texas.

"Schotty will have his mark, coach Adams will have his mark on the scheme, I'm excited about it," Vaughn said when asked if the scheme would change. "I won't say too much, but I'm really, really excited for it, these OTAs and the minicamp process was really fun. It was nice to dive into the playbook."

For Vaughn, scheme changes could be exactly what he needs as the Cowboys' run game needs to be refreshed. Over the last few years, the team's approach to pounding the rock has changed very slightly if at all.

If the scheme really does change, what could it look like?

What scheme changes could look like with new OC Klayton Adams

Though he wasn't the offensive architect for the Arizona Cardinals, Adams comes from an offense than ran the ball in very different ways compared to the Cowboys.

For starters, the Cardinals ran counter and other gap schemes while the Cowboys mostly stayed away from anything that wasn't zone runs. Arizona reaped the benefits of a different approach and became one of the most explosive rushing offenses in the NFL.

Here's what I wrote about Adams before he was hired earlier in the year: "(Adams was) part of an offense that used pulling blockers at an NFL-high mark last year, per Sports Info Solutions. The Cowboys were 22nd. The Cardinals ran the second-most counter attempts in the league, the Cowboys were 30th. In other words, Adams could spark true change in the way Dallas runs the football, which has grown significantly stale."

That creativity for the ground game is the biggest thing Schottenheimer's staff could do different in 2025 and it would be a major difference maker for Dallas.

It will be up to Vaughn to capitalize on it if it happens in training camp as he will arrive at Oxnard, California as one of the players with the most to prove if he's going to earn a roster spot.
