How do you feel about the Seahawks’ quarterback decisions, post-Russell Wilson trade?

Imagine telling yourself two years ago that the Seattle Seahawks would trade Russell Wilson, and that not only would Geno Smith be the starter, he’s set to be the start the 2024 season.

I’ve learned that, even though he’s been off the team for over two years, literally anything directly or indirectly related to Russell Wilson draws comments and pageviews. We might as well start Monday off with another Wilson topic!

What do you think about the Seahawks' quarterback decisions, post-Russell Wilson trade? - Field Gulls

We’ve been guessing and speculating as to what the Seahawks would do post-Wilson from the minute he was dealt. Seattle had opportunities to take a quarterback in each of the last three drafts and opted not to. Could the Seahawks have taken Anthony Richardson if they were a little higher up the draft board? Maybe, but that’s not what happened.

Here are some of the things the Seahawks could’ve done in lieu of starting Smith:

  • Signed Baker Mayfield in the 2022 offseason;
  • Drafted Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, or Matt Corral in the third round of 2022’s draft;
  • Drafted Will Levis (either at No. 20 or moving down in the 2023 draft order);
  • Moved on from Geno in the 2023 offseason and signed Derek Carr;
  • Try and trade up into the top-10 of this year’s draft;
  • Drafted Spencer Rattler in Day 3 of this year’s draft;
  • Moved on from Geno in the 2024 offseason and start anew at QB

I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting but these are just hypothetical exercises and alternate worlds.

In reality, Seattle stuck with Geno and gave him a contract extension after his Comeback Player of the Year performance. Relative to his peers, he might be a much bigger bargain than realized and has performed way beyond expectations. Drew Lock was acquired as part of the Wilson trade but never won the starting job. He did win hearts and minds when he filled in for Smith and humiliated the Philadelphia Eagles on national television. Lock is with the New York Giants, while the Seahawks traded for former Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell. John Schneider cited Howell’s NFL experience and age (23) as a selling point relative to the likes of the older Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr.

Today’s discussion is centered around how you feel about the front office’s process regarding the QB position since that seismic trade. Are you satisfied that it’s still Geno Smith at the helm? Disappointed he even got re-signed in the first place? Do you believe Sam Howell should be the starter or is the possible QBOTF? Did Drew Lock get a raw deal? Is the current QB situation satisfactory to you given the landscape of the past few years?

And, I suppose, do you think Wilson never should’ve been traded in the first place, and that his struggles in Denver aren’t all down to his performance? If you’re in that camp, presumably you wanted to keep Wilson and fire John Schneider and/or Pete Carroll, which was a more than defensible position to take at the time of the trade. I doubt that it’s a popular opinion now.
