Houston opens as slight underdogs vs. Bills in Week 5

The Houston Texans (3-1) will face the Buffalo Bills (3-1) in Week 5, where Houston will be looking to build off another promising win at home.

The Texans needed nearly 60 minutes to complete the comeback, but a C.J. Stroud 1-yard touchdown pass to Dare Ogunbowale was the x-factor in a 24-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The defense did allow two touchdown drives, but it also stopped Trevor Lawrence from breaking the game open in the fourth quarter on fourth down.

The Bills are coming off their first loss of the season after traveling to take on Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Derrick Henry looked like he was playing Houston in his prime Titans days at M&T Bank Stadium after rushing for 199 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries en route to a 35-10 victory.

Josh Allen, a favorite to win the MVP opposite Stroud, also didn’t score a touchdown for the first time in 2024.

Storylines are built around All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs against his former team and quarterback. Allen made several comments after the Bills’ 47-10 win over Jacksonville on how it was nice throwing to receivers who “don’t care about stats,” though he made it clear the following week those comments were taken out of context.

“I know there’s a lot of people talking out there, again, I’m not trying to tear down anybody,” Allen said on Wednesday. “I’ve loved everybody that I’ve played with, and you don’t have to tear other people down to build each other up. And we’re building each other up right now and that’s all we’re trying to do and trying to stay together as a team.”

The Bills have opened as a 1-point road favorite against Houston, according to BetMGM. The over/under is set at 47.5.

Some fans might disagree with the standings, but perhaps being the underdogs is a positive. Houston has yet to cover the spread when favored in a game this season, including losing outright against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

The Bills, meanwhile, are 2-2 in games this season when favored.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT on Sunday.
