The NY Jets are in such dire straits that their Super Bowl run has come to a close with a 3-8 start and pink slips for both Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas. Somehow, they aren't the worst football team in this city, as the Giants are 2-9 after reeling from the Saquon Barkley decision.
Barkley being a star with the Philadelphia Eagles not only is bad for the Giants, but it could hurt the Jets as well. The Giants will at least be bad enough to completely wipe the slate clean and rebuild with a new quarterback thanks to Barkley's desertion, while the Jets don't have that luxury.
The Giants are now 2-9 on the season. They are joined by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who could win more games if Trevor Lawrence returns to full health, and the Las Vegas Raiders, who will be equally terrible after Gardner Minshew was ruled out for the year with a broken collarbone.
The Giants and Raiders will likely be in a position to select the only two quarterbacks universally expected to be first-round picks in Miami's Cam Ward and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders. This leaves the Jets in a position to either overdraft an inferior prospect or miss out on a quarterback entirely.
The Jets could use their pick on Alabama's Jalen Milroe, but his stock could be plummeting after a hoor show against Oklahoma in which he threw three interceptions. A raw player who has insane physical tools, Milroe is the only quarterback who the Jets should even consider taking in the first round.
Texas' Quinn Ewers failed to take the step forward many expected, while Georgia's Carson Beck and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier have regressed to the point where it's rare to see them in the first round of any mock drafts. Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart and Penn State's Drew Allar could head back to school to prepare for 2026.
The Jets have the perfect veteran bridge quarterback already on the roster in Tyrod Taylor. Jordan Travis is on the roster, but it seems unlikely that an older fifth-round pick fresh off a major injury is going to make a dent in the team's short-term vision.
The Jets may take it on the chin again in 2025, as they are not in a position to draft an immediate starter and likely won't bring back Rodgers. This leaves them in a position to somehow miss the playoffs for a 15th consecutive season and possibly pile up their 10th straight losing season.
