Christian Watson showed promise during his rookie season. During his second season, he was dealing with injuries to his hamstring. Watson was healthy for most of the 2024 NFL season until he tore his ACL in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. His fourth season in the NFL could be in doubt because of the injury.

In the second-round of the 2025 NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers would have the 54th overall pick. Lombardiavenue.com writer Freddie Boston created a mock draft for the first three rounds and did his simulation through nflmockdraftdatabase.com. In the second-round, the Packers would select Texas Longhorns wide receiver Matthew Golden. Boston said:

“The draft is still three months away, which is more than enough time for Texas’ Matthew Golden to become a first-round lock. For now, he remains at least in the conversation to fall to Day 2, and that works for us.

Imagine a wide receiver who can make contested catches like Doubs, stretch defenses vertically like Watson, and separate like Dontayvion Wicks. Golden checks every box.

He has everything the Packers look for. The Texas product meets their strict size thresholds at 6-foot and 195 pounds, and he is likely to test well at the NFL Scouting Combine. Golden also offers tremendous versatility, with experience lining up outside and in the slot.

“Just finished studying Texas WR Matthew Golden. He could easily be the top WR in this draft class,” writes NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah.

He has the speed to hurt defenses deep. According to Ben Fennell of CBS, Golden tied Travis Hunter for the second-most 20-yard receptions in 2024, with 23.

The only concern is that Golden needs to work on his blocking, but he does everything else at a high level. The Packers would add another deep threat to their offense, which they desperately need, and Golden could quickly become a go-to target for Love.

Matthew Golden this past season with the Texas Longhorns caught 58 passes for 987 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, along with averaging 17.0 yards per catch. Golden has played for three seasons in college football and it will be interesting to see what translates for him at the next level.

There is no doubt that Matthew Golden will be drafted in the first two rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Green Bay Packers will need to find a number-one wide receiver for Jordan Love this offseason.

Scouting Wide Receivers

There is no question that the Green Bay Packers will be scouting wide receivers ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Outside of Matthew Golden from the Texas Longhorns, there will be some other names to watch for. Emeka Egbuka from Ohio State, Tre Harris, Luther Burden from Missouri, Jayden Higgins from Iowa State, and Elic Ayomanor from Stanford are some other names to watch for in the 2025 NFL Draft.

It would not be a surprise to see the Packers draft a wide receiver in the second-round, but it would be a surprise to see it happen in the first-round of the 2025 NFL Draft. It will be interesting to see how Matthew Golden does during the NFL scouting combine. Golden on Green Bay in 2025 next season could be a huge deal for Love because Matthew Golden was Quinn Ewers’s top target with the game on the line this past season.
