The Detroit Lions are expected to make a big splash just ahead of the NFL trade deadline which is just two days away. There is a reported blockbuster trade that is supposed to go down on Sunday evening between the Lions and the Cleveland Browns and that has Lions fans erupting with joy over the moves that their general manager Brad Holmes has been making.
Detroit Lions Set To Add Huge Defensive Piece
A recent report suggests that a trade deal between the Browns and Lions is on the verge of being finalized. While it may not be as sensational as the Myles Garrett trade idea that Mike Tannenbaum discussed on ESPN last Friday, it’s still an impactful move for both teams.
Sources indicate that Detroit is poised to acquire a pass rusher from Cleveland, potentially boosting their defensive lineup. This trade could strengthen the Lions’ edge presence as they make a push for the playoffs, while also allowing Cleveland to reallocate resources as the season progresses.
According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the Browns and Lions have been discussing a deal involving veteran outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith, and “the expectation” is that it will happen.
“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the current expectation is that Smith will be traded to Detroit tonight or tomorrow,” Florio wrote.
“Yes, the Lions and Browns have discussed a potential trade for defensive end Za’Darius Smith.,” Florio wrote. “At this point, the expectation is that it’ll be more than talk. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the current expectation is that Smith will be traded to Detroit tonight or tomorrow.”
Smith, 32, is currently playing for the Browns against the Los Angeles Chargers this afternoon, and has one tackle and a half-sack so far.
The Detroit fan base has been loving the move, and many of the fans have been taking to social media to show love for the general manager Holmes as he has been non-stop on the money with his moves, and he has the Lions looking like the best team in the NFC.
“Can he get to Green Bay before 4pm?” one Lions fan asked.
“I think Detroit still needs one more piece other than Za-Darius,” another person said.
“The Browns are having a going out of business sale,” a third person chimed in.
“Great move by Brad Holmes,” said a fourth commenter.
“He’s 32. I hope we don’t sell the farm for him,” a Lions fan added.
Since losing star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a season-ending leg injury on Oct. 13 against the Cowboys, the Lions have been searching for a replacement to strengthen their pass rush. While no trade acquisition will match Hutchinson’s impact, Detroit needs defensive help to boost their Super Bowl chances. Currently sitting at 6-1 and leading the NFC by half a game over the Packers and Commanders, Detroit faces a crucial game today against Green Bay.
