The Seattle Seahawks traveled east for a WEek 2 match-up against the New England Patriots. Coming off of a rough start offensively in week one, the Seahawks hoped to get things going quickly today, and behind stellar play, they did just that. Unfortunately for us, so did Jacoby Brissett and the Patriots. Finding tight end Hunter Henry approximately 60 times in their second drive, the Patriots moved the ball down the field with ease, and got on the board first with a touchdown to rookie wide receiver and former Washington Husky, Ja’Lynn Polk. The Seahawks responded quickly, with Geno finding a wide open DK Metcalf up the sideline for a 56-yard touchdown.
The 2nd quarter was more of the same. The Seahawks defense continued to yield, but tightened up in the redzone, holding the Patriots to just two field goals. Meanwhile, Geno and the Hawks offense stayed hot, with Zach Charbonnet finding pay-dirt for the second time in as many games. The Seahawks would punt just once in the 2nd quarter, daring to go for it on 4th down. Jason Myers then closed out the half with a 45-yard field goal, giving the Seahawks a 17-13 lead heading into halftime.
If you like ugly football, the 3rd quarter was one for you! Neither team put any points on the board, and aside from a handful of nice plays on both sides of the ball, there really wasn’t much happening. On a 4th and 1, the Seahawks kept playing dangerously, electing to run the ball instead of kicking the field goal. Charbonnet had nowhere to go, and the three points that could’ve been, loomed large for the remainder of the game.
The game seemed all but over for the Seahawks in the 4th quarter as Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson just kept running the ball right down their throats. The offense, completely incapable of running the ball, turned one-dimensional. Just as the things seemed the bleakest, Byron Murphy II blasted through the Patriots offensive line for his first career sack on 3rd down, and on the ensuing field goal, Julian Love found his way into the Patriots’ backfield and got a hand on the ball to block Joey Slye’s field goal. Then, like clockwork, Pete Carroll’s Mike MacDonald’s Seahawks found a way down the field in the final minutes and tied the game at 20. The defense held strong once more and forcing a quick 3-and-out. Seattle got the ball back with 15 seconds left in the game, and decided that sometimes, it’s okay to not win the game in the 4th quarter, a chose to regroup and take this one to overtime.
Patriots would win the coin toss and choose to receive, but couldn’t do anything with it. Geno and Tyler Lockett, as well as two great plays by Zach Charbonnet got the Seahawks in field goal range quickly. Not wanting to take any chances, the Seahawks lined up for the field goal on 2nd and 1, and let Jason Myers put this one on ice. Seahawks win 23-20, and with the San Francisco 49ers getting bested by Sam Darnold’s Minnesota Vikings, the Seahawks stand alone at the top of the NFC West.
The Seattle Seahawks return home for a week three match-up against the Miami Dolphins.
