Giants Veteran Cut Candidate a ‘Lock’ to Make Roster, Says Beat Reporter

One of the popular veteran cut candidates for the New York Giants all offseason was running back Devin Singletary, but according to NorthJersey.com beat reporter Art Stapleton, the expectation is still that Singletary will make the 53-man roster in 2025.

“If healthy, I think Singletary is a lock,” Stapleton told a Giants fan on July 21, just before the start of NYG training camp.

Giants cut candidate Devin Singletary called lock to make roster.

“No cap savings if released,” he explained. “With two and potentially three young guys, his presence on and off the field is valuable.”

The Giants could save $1.5 million in cap space by cutting Singletary this year, so Stapleton is exaggerating slightly when he says “no cap savings,” but it would make much more sense to trade the veteran running back or release him at the start of the 2026 offseason.

If traded at this point of the offseason or later, the Giants would shed $5 million of Singletary’s $6.25 million cap hit. They’d also save another $5.25 million next year, incurring a $2.5 million dead cap charge split evenly between 2025 and 2026.

Assuming Big Blue gets no trade offers for Singletary, and the front office elects to keep him as Stapleton predicted, the Giants could also save that same $5.25 million by releasing him at the start of the 2026 offseason. That appears to be the most likely outcome at this time.

Giants RB Room Should Center Around 2 Recent Draft Picks in 2025, With All Eyes on Cam Skattebo at Camp

Despite Singletary’s potential presence on the roster, the Giants’ running back rotation is expected to revolve around 2024 draft pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. and 2025 draft pick Cam Skattebo. Being that he’s the new guy in town, Skattebo should get a lot of the attention this summer.

“Skattebo’s running style makes him a favorite for a training camp fight, as defensive players likely won’t appreciate him lowering his shoulder in thud practices,” The Athletic’s Dan Duggan wrote on July 9, regarding the rookie.

“The question is if Skattebo’s toughness will translate to NFL games,” he continued. “The first impression of Skattebo this spring was that he looked smaller than his 5-foot-11, 215-pound listing. Skattebo, who ran a 4.65-second 40-yard dash, is going to need to rely on power to be successful. Skepticism about that transition likely led to Skattebo being available in the fourth round as the eighth running back off the board despite his prodigious production at Arizona State.”

Duggan added that “Skattebo’s receiving ability could be his path to success if he struggles to overpower NFL defenders.”

For what it’s worth, Duggan referred to Singletary as a well-paid “backup” during the same article, hinting that he agrees the veteran will make the Giants’ roster at the cutdown.

Giants Could Cut Eric Gray & Dante Miller If Devin Singletary Makes the Roster

The byproduct of Singletary making the roster would most likely be that 2023 draft pick Eric Gray will finally be cut.

Gray never showed any sort of consistency as a running back or returner during his first couple of seasons with the Giants, and general manager Joe Schoen has already made moves to replace him in both free agency and the draft.

The more exciting prospect who could be cut — if the Giants settle on three running backs — would be 2024 fan favorite UDFA Dante Miller.

There is a scenario where Miller makes the team as one of the lead returners, as well as running back depth. But the Giants may also feel that they can sneak him onto the practice squad once again, similar to last year.

Both Gray and Miller are candidates for the NYG practice squad, assuming they are willing to re-sign with the organization.
