The New York Giants saw two of their 2025 draft picks leave training camp practice with injuries on August 1, and the headliner was running back Cam Skattebo.
“Cam Skattebo and [tight end] Thomas Fidone have each left practice here at Giants camp and gone inside with the training staff,” NorthJersey.com beat reporter Art Stapleton relayed on X.
As New York Daily News reporter Pat Leonard noted after practice, Skattebo has been “clearly banged up after Monday’s heavy workload,” but a trending video clip seemed to spark concern that Friday’s early exit could be something more serious.
“Cam Skattebo slammed his helmet now walking off with trainer,” the Giants Nation Show podcast (hosted by Bobby Skinner) commented while sharing a clip of Skattebo walking toward the locker room on August 1.
The post generated over 180,000 views in under eight hours, as fans all speculated on the mysterious injury. Unfortunately, there has been no injury update from the Giants at this time.
Later, Skinner added that Skattebo was “really frustrated leaving the field.”
Skattebo looked tremendous running and catching the football earlier this week. Then, all of a sudden, injuries began to derail the rookie’s progress.
It’s been difficult for the media to figure out what’s going on with Skattebo this week, as head coach Brian Daboll has kept all injury news as close to the vest as possible.
“Daboll has been in regular season mode with injury updates,” The Athletic’s Dan Duggan told a fan on August 1, adding: “But believe it’s a hamstring for Skattebo.”
To be clear, this is not confirmed, although Duggan does have sources within the Giants organization.
Before practice, Daboll attributed Skattebo’s on-and-off status this week to load management more than anything else.
“We thought [not practicing] was best for him,” Daboll said on Friday, before Skattebo left practice with what could be a new injury, or a setback of some sort.
The Giants head coach added that they are “just managing” Skattebo, and that he’ll be “okay” going forward. Again, this was all before the rookie running back left practice on August 1.
Daboll also seemingly confirmed that Big Blue’s current injury management is not related to anything Skattebo dealt with during the spring.
Daboll spoke highly of all three of his top running backs on Friday, pre-practice. Confirming his belief that Skattebo, second-year draft pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. and veteran Devin Singletary are all three-down backs that can do just about anything when needed.
The Giants HC also explained why this can be such a strength for an NFL offense.
“I think with any of those backs that we have, you don’t necessarily — back in the day, there were times we had a first- and second-down back, and then we had a third-down back — I think all three of those guys are capable to run, to pass block, to run routes,” Daboll replied.
Continuing later: “Sometimes [having specific RB roles] gives indicators [to the opponent]. Alright, if this guy’s in the game, it’s either going to be this or this. [The defensive coordinator] can eliminate some options. So, the more all-purpose backs you can have that can do a variety of things, I think that helps.”
With a healthy Skattebo joining the group, the Giants’ running back room has the potential to be really fun and exciting in 2025, but Daboll and company will need to find a way to keep the rookie out of the medical tent for it all to come to fruition.
