Giants Rival Set for New Stadium

The Washington Commanders are the red-headed stepchild of the NFC East. They’ve won just 36 percent of their divisional games since the turn of the millennium. They’ve long been the butt of jokes, the get-right game, and the favorite to suspend themselves somewhere between mediocre and bad.

Immediately, quarterback Jayden Daniels changed that.

The easy Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels lapped the field and turned a four-win Washington team into a Super Bowl contender, coasting to the NFC Championship Round with an electric offense.

The changes won’t stop there. The New York Giants' rival is now set for a new stadium and a (12-mile) relocation.

The news, announced on Monday by owner Josh Harris, would move the Commanders back to Washington D.C., rather than Landover, Maryland.

“Today is a defining moment for the DMV and the Washington Commanders. RFK Stadium holds a legendary place in our history – it’s where the team dominated the NFL, capturing three Super Bowls and creating unforgettable memories for fans. Now, we have the opportunity to honor that legacy by building a new world-class stadium – one that is also a once-in-a-generation catalyst for uplifting and transforming our region,” Harris said.

“Working hand-in-hand with District and community leaders, we’re focused on delivering an incredible home for our players and fans, creating a landmark venue that reflects the pride of our nation’s capital, and sparking a new era of economic opportunity across the DMV. RFK was once a place our fans loved, and opponents feared – we’re determined to make it that way again.”

The stadium is set to open in 2030.

Notably, Washington’s new home is set to have a dome, controlling the environment and sparing New York kickers the dreadful weather that can follow them from East Rutherford late in the year.

The Giants are 13-7 in their last 20 games in Landover, where Washington began playing in 1997.

As for the present, Washington will enter the season as the second-place favorite in the division, behind the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams made impressive strides to take down Philadelphia in the offseason and, of course, will play twice in 2025.
